When you think of Tetris, you think of the shaped blocks, disappearing lines, and a catchy theme song that gets stuck in your head for hours (or years). The last thing you think of is story/plot since there isn’t any. It is a basic game done to near perfection, which explains the decades of success, dozens of spin-offs, and cultural influence. Still, thanks to that success, Hollywood looks to succeed where so many other video game movies have failed and turn Tetris into a major blockbuster. If that isn’t enough to make you cringe, you either haven’t seen enough video game based movies (lucky you) or the idea of trying to make a 90-120 minute movie on a basic puzzle game with zero story hasn’t sunk in for you yet. It turns out this wasn’t even the “biggest” news with Tetris. Threshold Golden Studios seems extremely confident that this movie will do well because Tetris the Movie will be the first part in a sci-fi trilogy. You read that correctly. I think I finally understand Mugatu from Zoolander when he wondered if everyone was on crazy pills. In what universe will Tetris turn into a trilogy? It is getting a decent budget ($80 million), but they also have producer Larry Kasanoff. He does have the surprisingly not terrible Mortal Kombat movie (not to be confused with the awful Mortal Kombat: Annihilation) to his credit, but he also has the so awful it is actually offensive movie Food Fight. Kasanoff does promise this film will deliver and not be what you expect. Honestly, what is there to expect from a movie about a game where you create lines with falling blocks while avoiding the stack reaching a ceiling? Then again, I could end up being wrong about this and Tetris the Movie ends up being great. The Angry Birds movie has been on a national tour of shutting up critics with surprise praise, so perhaps there may be a miracle brewing here that could take everyone off guard. Or we could end up with another flop like Battleship. Considering Hollywood’s track records with properties like this, I know where I am placing my bet.
